Director Chuck Jones’ rules for writing Road Runner cartoons, copied from Wikipedia:

  1. Road Runner cannot harm the Coyote except by going “beep, beep”.
  2. No outside force can harm the Coyote—only his own ineptitude or the failure of Acme products.
  3. The Coyote could stop anytime—if he was not a fanatic. (Repeat: “A fanatic is one who redoubles his effort when he has forgotten his aim.” —George Santayana).
  4. No dialogue ever, except “beep, beep”.
  5. Road Runner must stay on the road—for no other reason than that he’s a roadrunner.
  6. All action must be confined to the natural environment of the two characters—the southwest American desert.
  7. All tools, weapons, or mechanical conveniences must be obtained from the Acme Corporation.
  8. Whenever possible, make gravity the Coyote’s greatest enemy.
  9. The Coyote is always more humiliated than harmed by his failures.
  10. The audience’s sympathy must remain with the Coyote.

ISO paper sizes are all based on a single aspect ratio of the square root of two, or approximately 1:1.4142. The advantages of basing a paper size upon this ratio were already noted in 1786 by the German scientist Georg Lichtenberg (in a letter to Johann Beckmann): if a sheet with aspect ratio √2 is divided into two equal halves parallel to its shortest side, then the halves will again have aspect ratio √2. In the beginning of the twentieth century, Dr Walter Porstmann turned Lichtenberg’s idea into a proper system of different paper sizes. Porstmann’s system was introduced as a DIN standard (DIN 476) in Germany in 1922, replacing a vast variety of other paper formats. Even today the paper sizes are called « DIN A4 » in everyday use in Germany.

Fascinant détour la semaine dernière, en fin d’une réunion sur un tout autre sujet, sur le Go, jeu de stratégie japonais.

Fidèle à mon habitude, les jeux me fascinent pour leurs règles, leur fonctionnement et leur beauté plastique, plus que leur aspect compétitif. Le Go a toutes ces qualités et m’a fasciné à 14 ans, à travers mes lectures de la fantastique revue française Jeux & Stratégies. Je me souviens avoir insister pour que mes parents m’en rapporte un de Paris, ce qui fut fait, à mon grand bonheur (fort probablement acheté au Nain bleu, mythique magasin de jouets du 8e).

Mon seul problème est de n’avoir jamais trouvé de joueurs pour m’affronter ou développer mon talent…

Le Championnat canadien 2008 se tient justement à Québec en fin de semaine. Et il y a plein de gens qui y jouent à Québec!

En attendant, je vais me pratiquer en lisant « The Way To Go » et en jouant virtuellement avec Goban.

De «tiens! Le Cefrio a un blogue…»

Le Cefrio a un blogue, je ne l’avais pas vu… Et il a un fil RSS (oui! oui! après toutes ces années!). Ça serait gentil de mettre configurer le HEAD de la page pour l’auto-détection et pour simplifier l’abonnement.

Reste à les convaincre qu’un fil RSS c’est aussi pratique pour les communiqués, les publications, et tout le reste… (Jean-Sébastien?)

Tiens, ils ont une nouvelle directrice générale: Jacqueline Dubé aussi. (Et je suis le premier à en parler on dirait…)

De deux fils RSS et du AppStore…

Le RSS c’est malheureusement encore trop obscur pour le commun des mortels et loin d’être un premier réflexe, même pour les gros joueurs. La preuve: Apple n’offre pas de fils RSS pour le AppStore, ses nouveautés ou ses mises à jour.
